About Us
DigitalPlantain aims to help young people who were born into poverty in Haiti gain access to educational resources. Because Haiti is the most economically impoverished country in the Western Hemisphere, with over half of the population living on the equivalent of less than $2 US per day, many schools have minimal resources.
We work to address this lack of educational resources by creating and delivering software in Creole directly to educators and students in locations across Haiti. Currently, we work in three of Haiti's ten departments: Grand'Anse, Ouest, and Nord.
For over 98% of our students in some areas, our software and recycled computers enable them to touch a computer for the very first time. Most of our equipment must be hand-carried by volunteers traveling to Haiti.
Teaching is primarily conducted by Haitian In Country Directors and local instructors. We are also working to help educators and more advanced students in Haiti learn programming so that they can program their own educational software.
Our goal is that each student who learns will in turn teach others, so that the knowledge will spread.
